The Innocence of a Three Year Old

Throughout everything we wondered how we would explain things to the boys. We worried that it would be too difficult for them to understand and we were told we had to choose our words carefully when talking about Nathaniel going to heaven. We didn't want the boys to worry that Mommy or Daddy or anyone else they loved would get "sick" and go to heaven too. Fortunately, this was the easiest for them to understand. Kyle proudly says that our baby is in heaven with Jesus. The night Nathaniel was born Kyle was all smiles. He eagerly asked to kiss and hug his baby brother many times. He hasn't asked any questions and he is content in knowing that Nathaniel is with Jesus. Jacob, however has a lot of questions that we don't know how to answer to a six year old. He understands that when someone dies, their spirit goes to heaven. He obviously doesn't really get what a person's spirit is but he knows that the physical body doesn't work anymore and a person gets a "new body" in heaven. His only previous experience with death was his great grandpa's. He knows that great grandpa's body is buried and has visited the grave site a few times with us. We had Nathaniel cremated so explaining this to Jacob without scaring him is very complicated. We've been trying to avoid talking about it at all and just reinforcing that Nathaniel is in heaven. If anyone knows of any books or resources that specifically deals with cremation and is appropriate for a six year old, please enlighten us. We are at a loss for what to tell him.

I don't have any advice, but I did find this article on a couple funeral home websites http://funeralplan.com/kwiatkowski/cremation4

There was another common article on a lot of sites, but it detailed everything, and I thought that was way too much for a child...even for me...to read.

I found this article as well, and there's a children's book listed at the end of it.
